In 2024, MTSCO successfully completed a high-demand petrochemical project with a Brazilian customer and provided customized Monel 400 explosive cladding plates. The project has a complex background and a tight schedule. The customer has extremely high standards for the corrosion resistance, structural strength and interface integrity of the product. The MTSCO team finally delivered the cladding plates with a total thickness of 20mm (structure of 16+4mm), the substrate is SA 516 Gr.60N, the coating is Monel 400 (UNS N04400), and the ASTM A265 standard is strictly implemented. All products pass 100% ultrasonic testing and TÜV third-party certification.

The biggest challenge of the project comes from the control of the bonding between dissimilar metals. Faced with the differences in physical properties such as thermal expansion coefficient and acoustic impedance between nickel-based alloys and carbon steel, MTSCO adopts a multi-parameter coupling control strategy. It can accurately match the propagation path of the explosion stress wave with the dynamic response behavior of the material. By precisely controlling the 1~15mm gap, buffer layer configuration and collision angle, an atomic-level metallurgical bonding strength of over 352MPa was finally achieved, effectively avoiding potential defects such as delamination and cracks.

Explosive welding is a solid-state cladding process that does not require melting and relies on shock wave energy to achieve metal bonding. It is particularly suitable for the preparation of dissimilar metal cladding materials such as titanium-steel and nickel-steel. In the fields of petrochemical equipment, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, desalination devices and marine engineering, explosive cladding plates have gradually become a new generation of key material solutions due to their high bonding strength, excellent corrosion resistance and good processing compatibility.
This project fully demonstrates the adaptability of explosive cladding plates under the dual needs of "high performance + cost control": using economical carbon steel as the structural substrate to improve the overall cost performance.Key parts are coated with high corrosion-resistant alloys to enhance the equipment life. Standardized thickness design facilitates downstream welding and equipment docking, shortens the construction period and reduces the overall cost.
Explosive cladding plates are becoming a new trend in high-end equipment materials. Material selection is not only about cost, but also about safety. As a mature supplier of nickel-based alloys, MTSCO not only has stable material resources and production processes, but also can provide customers with full-process services such as material recommendations, drawing assistance, and welding technology docking. Behind every successful cladding is the ultimate control of technology and process.
